LASC Trail Trek On Saturday, January 22, 2005, 25 humans and 17 llamas met up at the Sylvan Meadows multi-use area of the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve in Murrieta for the first LASC Trail Trek of the year. Several of the humans were new to llamas and some were new to hiking—everyone enjoyed the morning outing. After the heavy rains, there was some uncertainty about whether or not the hike would be on—the Reserve had been closed because of severe flooding suffered during the storms. But Saturday dawned bright and clear and cool. Perfect weather for the 2 ½ mile hike. See the Reserve at www.santarosaplateau.org LASC needs a Trail Trek coordinator for 2005. Could it be you?

MY FAVORITE TRAILS I got this request by E-mail: Maybe someone could suggest a hike area each month? It sounds like a good idea for a regular column in Footprints, and I thought I’d start off with my own favorite trail: Ice House Canyon on Mount Baldy. To get to there, take Mountain or Euclid from the Upland area—off either the 210 or the 10 freeways—and head north. Follow the signs toward Mount Baldy. The trailhead is just past Mount Baldy Village. Recent improvements include a paved parking area—with plenty of space for trucks and trailers—and restrooms. The trail is mostly shaded except for a few exposed areas and runs along a beautiful stream complete with deep, quiet pools and small waterfalls—and lots of great sandy beach areas for picnicking. It’s a lovely place for a day hike but also connects with other trails for overnight pack trips, if you’re looking for more of an adventure. I’ve been hiking in Ice House Canyon since my aunt took me there as a little girl. When I was at college in Claremont, I spent most weekends up the mountain. I highly recommend it as a llama hike destination—sometime in the future. Here’ the bad news—ALL TRAILS IN THE ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST ARE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE DUE TO EXTREME FIRE HAZARD. |
